In 1919, a disused chalk quarry in the heart of Charlton village was transformed into a football ground by an army of volunteers armed with picks and shovels. The result was \u003cstrong data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1613\"\u003eThe Valley\u003c\/strong\u003e, its steep natural banks forming vast terraces that would soon hold tens of thousands. Conditions were primitive — no stands, no shelter, no barriers — but the sense of permanence marked a turning point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"2149\"\u003eThat same year Charlton joined the Kent League, turned professional in 1920, and quickly moved into the Southern League. By 1922 The Valley had been expanded with a West Stand and was already being spoken of as a potential FA Cup Final venue, such was its vast capacity. Yet falling attendances prompted an ill-fated move to Catford for the 1923–24 season, where Charlton adopted the blue-striped colours of Catford South End in a proposed merger. The experiment failed, and within a year the club returned home to The Valley — and to their traditional red and white.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"2647\" data-end=\"3060\"\u003eProgress was gradual. Charlton survived re-election in 1926 before finally breaking through in 1929 as champions of the Third Division South. Though relegated again in 1933, the appointment of \u003cstrong data-start=\"2840\" data-end=\"2854\"\u003eJimmy Seed\u003c\/strong\u003e transformed the club’s fortunes. It was a remarkable ascent for a club that, little more than a decade earlier, had been fighting for its place in the lower divisions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"3457\" data-end=\"3854\"\u003eThe interruption of the Second World War denied Charlton the chance to build further on that success, but they remained a formidable force. When competitive football resumed, they reached the \u003cstrong data-start=\"3649\" data-end=\"3670\"\u003e1946 FA Cup Final\u003c\/strong\u003e, only to lose to Derby County after extra time.
