As locomotives built in Springburn were exported across the world, the local football club was establishing a reputation of its own on the pitch.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAlthough initially regarded as a small club, Cowlairs quickly developed into one of Scotland's strongest emerging sides. They reached the latter stages of the Scottish Cup, enjoyed success in local competitions and even entered the English FA Cup in 1886–87, defeating both Darwen Old Wanderers and Rossendale before narrowly losing 3–2 to Rangers. It remains one of the most remarkable and little-known episodes in Victorian football history.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe club also produced international footballers. Tom McInnes represented Scotland in 1889, while John McPhersonwon two of his international caps as a Cowlairs player before later enjoying a distinguished career with Rangers.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn 1890, Cowlairs secured their place in football history by becoming one of the founder members of the Scottish Football League. They moved to Springvale Park, close to the famous railway works, and took their place alongside clubs such as Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Dumbarton and Third Lanark in the inaugural league championship.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUnfortunately, their first League campaign proved disastrous. Cowlairs finished bottom of the table and had four points deducted for fielding ineligible players. At a time when professionalism remained illegal in Scottish football, allegations concerning payments to players further damaged the club's standing and, despite the League expanding, Cowlairs failed to secure re-election at the end of the season.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYet the story did not end there.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRather than disappear quietly, Cowlairs rebuilt. Joining the Scottish Football Alliance for the 1892–93 season, they won the championship at the first attempt before becoming members of the newly formed Scottish League Division Two the following year. They finished an impressive second, only two points behind Hibernian, but were cruelly denied promotion after the League's election ballot favoured Clyde instead. It remains one of the great \"what if?\" stories of early Scottish football.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFinancial difficulties eventually caught up with the club.
