In 1886–87 they took the unusual step of entering the English FA Cup, then open to Scottish clubs. They recorded a remarkable 10–2 victory over Rossendale—one of the competition’s most emphatic away wins—before bowing out to Rangers in a closely contested tie at Kinning Park. Their performance was described as “dashing”, if at times overly robust, reflecting the physical nature of the era.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe club’s rise was further underlined by representative honours. Tom McInnes and John McPherson both gained international recognition for Scotland while at Cowlairs, a notable achievement for a club outside the established elite.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCowlairs reached a historic milestone in 1890 as one of the founder members of the Scottish Football League. However, their inaugural league campaign proved disastrous. They finished bottom of the table and were docked four points for fielding ineligible players—an issue not uncommon in the loosely regulated early years of league football. More damaging still were allegations of professionalism following an inspection of the club’s finances, at a time when such practices were not yet legal in Scotland. These controversies contributed to their failure to secure re-election to the League, their place going instead to Leith Athletic.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDespite this setback, Cowlairs remained competitive. They enjoyed their best Scottish Cup run shortly afterwards, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to Celtic. Cowlairs performed admirably, finishing runners-up to Hibernian, but promotion was not automatic and they missed out in the election process. The following seasons were marked by mounting financial and administrative difficulties. After finishing bottom of Division Two in 1895–96, the club was again voted out of the League.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBurdened by debt and unable to sustain operations, Cowlairs folded in 1896 and were struck from the Scottish FA roll.
