A permanent home was secured in 1898 with the move to North Road.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe club entered organised competition in 1890, joining the North Cheshire League, and achieved early success by winning the championship in the 1893–94 season. In 1894 Glossop turned professional and stepped up to the Combination. Their first season at this higher level saw them finish runners-up by a single point to Ashton North End, closing the campaign with eight consecutive victories and a formidable goal record. A third-place finish followed in 1895–96, their defensive strength again notable, though goals proved harder to come by.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eProgress continued with a move to the Midland League, where Glossop were runners-up in 1896–97 before slipping to mid-table the following season. That same year brought their first notable FA Cup run, advancing through three qualifying rounds before falling 5–2 to First Division side Stoke.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eElection to the Football League came in 1898, aided by expansion of the competition and the backing of chairman Sir Samuel Hill-Wood. Glossop finished as runners-up in the Second Division in their debut season (1898–99), securing promotion to the First Division. To avoid confusion with Preston North End, the club dropped “North End” from their name ahead of their only season in the top flight.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe 1899–1900 campaign proved a difficult one. Glossop finished bottom of the First Division, winning four matches—all at North Road—including a notable victory over eventual champions Aston Villa, and were relegated.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe club remained in the Second Division for the next fifteen seasons. Early promise saw respectable finishes in 1901 and 1902, but thereafter Glossop struggled to maintain consistency, frequently finding themselves near the foot of the table and reliant on re-election to retain their league status. A highlight of this period came in the 1908–09 FA Cup, when the club reached the quarter-finals before losing narrowly to Bristol City in a replay.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAttendances peaked on 31 January 1914, when a crowd of 10,736 watched an FA Cup tie against Preston North End at North Road. However, fortunes declined sharply, and in 1914–15 Glossop finished bottom of the Second Division once more. The outbreak of the First World War soon brought league football to a halt.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFollowing the war, the club was re-formed under the guidance of former player and local MP Oswald Partington.
