Opened in 1884, the ground was originally home to Everton, who had been forced to seek a new venue after outgrowing their previous home at Priory Road. The land belonged to local businessman John Orrell, who agreed to lease the site to the club for a modest rent. The first match played there took place on 28 September 1884, when Everton comfortably defeated Earlestown 5–0.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAlthough relatively modest in its earliest form, Anfield quickly established a reputation as one of the finest football grounds in the country. As Everton's popularity grew, so too did the stadium. Basic spectator accommodation was added, allowing crowds of more than 8,000 to watch matches regularly, while the overall capacity was estimated to be around 20,000. Such was the quality of the venue that it staged an international fixture between England and Ireland in 1889, demonstrating the esteem in which it was already held.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe introduction of the Football League in 1888 further enhanced Anfield's standing. Everton played their first league match at the ground against Accrington on 8 September that year, and within only a few seasons the club had become one of the leading sides in English football. Their success reached its peak in 1890–91 when they captured the Football League championship, making Anfield the home of England's league champions.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDespite this success, relations between Everton's committee and club president John Houlding gradually deteriorated. Disagreements over financial matters and the future ownership of the ground eventually became irreconcilable. Rather than remain at Anfield, Everton elected to leave and build a new home at nearby Goodison Park in 1892. The decision left Houlding in possession of an empty football ground but without a club to occupy it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRather than allow the stadium to fall silent, Houlding decided to create a new football club. Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Ltd was formed in 1892 specifically to play at Anfield, giving birth to what would become one of the world's most famous football institutions. Liverpool's first match at the ground was a friendly against Rotherham Town on 1 September 1892, watched by around 200 spectators. The new side announced itself in emphatic fashion with a 7–1 victory.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLeague football arrived at Anfield for Liverpool a year later. On 9 September 1893, Lincoln City became the visitors for the club's first Football League fixture at the ground, with approximately 5,000 supporters seeing Liverpool record a convincing 4–0 victory. As attendances increased, improvements to the stadium soon followed. In 1895 a new grandstand capable of accommodating around 3,000 spectators was erected on the site of today's Main Stand. Designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, the structure featured distinctive red-and-white gables and reflected the growing ambition of both club and ground.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFurther development continued during the opening years of the twentieth century. A timber and corrugated iron stand was added at the Anfield Road end in 1903, while Liverpool's second Football League title in 1906 prompted the construction of a substantial new terrace along Walton Breck Road. Local sports journalist Ernest Edwards christened the stand the \u003cb\u003eSpion Kop\u003c\/b\u003e, taking its name from the famous South African battlefield where many British soldiers, including large numbers from Liverpool, had lost their lives during the Boer War. The name quickly entered football folklore and would eventually be adopted by grounds across Britain, although Anfield's Kop soon became the largest and most celebrated of them all. A further stand was also erected along Kemlyn Road, completing the transformation of Anfield into one of the country's premier football venues.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBy the beginning of the Edwardian era, Anfield had evolved from a rented field on the outskirts of Liverpool into one of England's finest football grounds. It had already witnessed a league championship, an international match, the birth of Liverpool Football Club and the construction of the famous Spion Kop.
