In the formative years of organised football in Scotland, these three neighbouring clubs formed a remarkable concentration of strength, regularly challenging the dominance of Glasgow’s leading sides.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRenton emerged as a force almost immediately. They reached the semi-finals of the inaugural Scottish FA Cup in 1874 and advanced to the final the following season, though on both occasions they were defeated by the great amateur power of the age, Queen’s Park.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe club’s early history is complicated by conflicting contemporary and later accounts. Norman Nichol suggested Renton folded in 1875 before reforming in 1880, while Alex Graham placed their period of inactivity between 1882 and 1883. Brian McColl’s research instead points to inactivity during 1881–82. Further investigation by Rumwold Leigh casts doubt on an early closure altogether, noting that Renton appeared in every Scottish Cup from 1874 to 1880 and only scratched from the 1881–82 competition.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLeigh suggests the club effectively ceased operations after their Scottish Cup elimination in October 1880 but survived administratively long enough to enter the following season’s competition—an arrangement not uncommon in the era, when clubs sometimes maintained Scottish FA subscriptions in anticipation of revival.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBy the mid-1880s Renton had re-established themselves at the summit of Scottish football. In 1885 they defeated local rivals Vale of Leven to win the Scottish Cup for the first time. They reached the final again in 1886, losing once more to Queen’s Park, before achieving their greatest domestic triumph in 1888. In that final they overwhelmed Cambuslang 6–0, a margin of victory that remains a record in the competition’s history.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThree months later came the match that would secure Renton’s place in football folklore. At Hampden Park they defeated English FA Cup holders West Bromwich Albion in a challenge match grandly billed as being for the “Championship of the United Kingdom and the World.” Though unofficial, the result earned Renton the enduring title of “World Champions.” Two years later they were among the founder members of the Scottish Football League.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTheir league career, however, was short-lived. Only weeks into the inaugural season Renton were suspended by the Scottish FA after playing a friendly against “Edinburgh Saints,” who were in reality the suspended professional side St Bernard’s. With no option available, the League expelled Renton and expunged their record. Although a legal challenge later overturned the suspension, allowing the club to rejoin the League in 1891, the damage was lasting.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe formal recognition of professionalism in 1893 marked the beginning of Renton’s irreversible decline. As a village club, they could not compete financially with larger urban sides. During the 1893–94 season they managed just a single league victory and were relegated to the Second Division via end-of-season election. Administrative difficulties persisted, notably in 1894–95 when Renton failed to fulfil a league fixture against Dundee Wanderers in favour of a lucrative friendly with Queen’s Park. The points were awarded to Dundee, and Renton were fortunate to escape harsher sanctions.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTheir final brush with prominence came in their fifth Scottish Cup final, where they were narrowly beaten 2–1 by St Bernard’s. On the field Renton remained competitive in the Second Division, but chronic financial problems proved insurmountable. Even at their peak, home attendances rarely exceeded a few hundred, and at one stage the club even contemplated relocating to Glasgow.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn the 1897–98 season Renton were unable to meet the Scottish League’s required match guarantees after just four fixtures and resigned from competition. Their place was taken by Hamilton Academical. For several seasons thereafter Renton survived on a diet of cup ties and friendlies before joining the Scottish Combination in 1902. They continued in regional football until 1920, when they resigned from the Western League and were formally wound up.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTontine Park, the scene of their greatest triumphs, was sold for housing.
