The family moved to Derby in 1879, settling in Litchurch, where young Steve grew up in the hard, industrial world of late Victorian Derby. By the age of twelve he had left school and entered the blacksmith trade, later working as a striker in the iron industry — work that helped build the strength and endurance that would serve him so well on the football field.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBloomer’s early football was played locally, first with St James’ School, then Derby Swifts, Tutbury Hawthorn and Derby Midland. His talent was soon noticed by John Goodall, Derby County’s great forward and one of the most important footballing influences of Bloomer’s early career. Derby signed him as a teenager, and on 3 September 1892 he made his senior debut against Stoke. He scored immediately, beginning one of the most extraordinary goalscoring careers in English football history.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAn inside-right of rare intelligence and deadly accuracy, Bloomer became famous for his powerful low shot — the “daisy cutter” — struck hard, true and close to the turf. He was not merely a finisher, but a footballer of instinct and timing, capable of finding space, striking with either foot, and turning half-chances into goals. For Derby County he became the club’s defining player: their record goalscorer, their greatest attraction, and the man around whom much of their late Victorian and Edwardian identity was built.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAcross his Football League career, Bloomer scored at a remarkable rate. He was First Division top scorer on five occasions, helped Derby finish runners-up in 1895–96, and appeared in three FA Cup finals, in 1898, 1899 and 1903. Though Derby lost each of those finals, Bloomer’s standing only grew. In 1906 his transfer to Middlesbrough for £750 caused a sensation, and he continued to score freely on Teesside before returning to Derby in 1910. Even then, in the autumn of his playing days, he helped lead the Rams to the Second Division title in 1911–12. His final senior appearances came when he was already forty.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor England, Bloomer’s record was astonishing. He made his international debut on 9 March 1895, scoring twice in a 9–0 victory over Ireland at Derby. He scored in each of his first ten England appearances — a record that still stands — and finished with 28 goals in just 23 caps. He became England’s record goalscorer in 1898 and remained the benchmark for generations. At his peak, he was the most feared forward in international football, especially in the British Championship, where all his England appearances were made.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBloomer’s life was not without hardship. His mother died when he was still young, and later he endured family losses of his own, including the deaths of two daughters. During the First World War, having gone to Germany to coach Britannia Berlin 92, he was interned at Ruhleben, the civilian detention camp near Berlin. Even there, football remained central to his life: matches and competitions were organised among the internees, with Bloomer one of the best-known figures in the camp.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter the war, Bloomer coached abroad, including in the Netherlands and Spain. His greatest coaching success came with Real Unión, whom he guided to victory in the 1924 Copa del Rey. He later returned to Derby, working at the Baseball Ground as a coach, groundsman and general assistant. He had also been a talented baseball player in his earlier years, helping Derby Baseball Club win national honours during the 1890s.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSteve Bloomer died in Derby on 16 April 1938, aged 64. His funeral at Derby Cathedral drew huge crowds, a reflection of the affection in which he was held. Today, he remains one of Derby County’s immortal figures.
