Cowlairs FC – The Forgotten Founder Members of the Scottish Football League

Long before Scottish football became dominated by the great names of Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Hibernian, another Glasgow club was helping to shape the game. Today, few supporters have heard of Cowlairs FC, yet this remarkable club was one of the founder members of the Scottish Football League in 1890 and played an important role in the development of football during the Victorian era.

Founded in 1876 by craftsmen employed at the famous Cowlairs and Hyde Park railway works in Glasgow's rapidly expanding Springburn district, Cowlairs were a product of the Industrial Revolution. As locomotives built in Springburn were exported across the world, the local football club was establishing a reputation of its own on the pitch.

Although initially regarded as a small club, Cowlairs quickly developed into one of Scotland's strongest emerging sides. They reached the latter stages of the Scottish Cup, enjoyed success in local competitions and even entered the English FA Cup in 1886–87, defeating both Darwen Old Wanderers and Rossendale before narrowly losing 3–2 to Rangers. It remains one of the most remarkable and little-known episodes in Victorian football history.

The club also produced international footballers. Tom McInnes represented Scotland in 1889, while John McPhersonwon two of his international caps as a Cowlairs player before later enjoying a distinguished career with Rangers.

In 1890, Cowlairs secured their place in football history by becoming one of the founder members of the Scottish Football League. They moved to Springvale Park, close to the famous railway works, and took their place alongside clubs such as Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Dumbarton and Third Lanark in the inaugural league championship.

Unfortunately, their first League campaign proved disastrous. Cowlairs finished bottom of the table and had four points deducted for fielding ineligible players. At a time when professionalism remained illegal in Scottish football, allegations concerning payments to players further damaged the club's standing and, despite the League expanding, Cowlairs failed to secure re-election at the end of the season.

Yet the story did not end there.

Rather than disappear quietly, Cowlairs rebuilt. Joining the Scottish Football Alliance for the 1892–93 season, they won the championship at the first attempt before becoming members of the newly formed Scottish League Division Two the following year. They finished an impressive second, only two points behind Hibernian, but were cruelly denied promotion after the League's election ballot favoured Clyde instead. It remains one of the great "what if?" stories of early Scottish football.

Financial difficulties eventually caught up with the club. After finishing bottom of Division Two in 1894–95, Cowlairs returned to Gourlay Park, and by 1896 the club had ceased to exist, bringing an end to a twenty-year history that had helped lay the foundations of organised football in Scotland.

Today, Cowlairs FC is largely forgotten outside dedicated football historians. Yet they were pioneers: founder members of the Scottish Football League, Scottish Alliance champions, Glasgow cup winners, FA Cup participants and a club that produced international footballers. Their story deserves to be remembered.
