The 18th World Club Championship was contested between the English Cup holders Bury; who had thrashed Derby County 6 v 0 at The Crystal Palace in Sydenham; South London the previous April; and the Scottish Cup holders Rangers; who had overcome Heart of Midlothian following two replays; with all three games having taken place at Celtic Park.

The 1903/04 World Club Championship was a two-legged affair with the first leg taking place on Xmas Day 1903 where Bury took a slender lead to Glasgow with the Lancashire side’s winner coming from a penalty at Gigg Lane. The second leg was again won narrowly by Bury on 4 January 1904 with Richards of Bury again on the scoresheet. Newspaper reports of the day indicated that both games were evenly contested.

This brought to an end this series of matches which meant that Bury were the last winners of this competition that had started in 1876. FIFA were formed on 21 May 1904 and perhaps this was the reason for the series of games to come to an end i.e. association football now had a global body.
