Bradford City, Scotland & the Fallen of the Great War

James Hamilton Speirs MM was born in the shipbuilding district of Govan, Glasgow, on 22 March 1886. A gifted inside-forward of intelligence, courage, and authority, Speirs enjoyed a distinguished ten-year career in professional football in Scotland and England, scoring more than 100 goals and captaining Bradford City to the greatest achievement in their history—the FA Cup triumph of 1911. His life, however, would be cut tragically short when he was killed in action during the First World War.

Football Career

Speirs first made his name with the highly successful amateur side Maryhill FC, where his performances earned him a move to Rangers in the summer of 1905. Although his debut came in a heavy defeat to Heart of Midlothian, Speirs quickly established himself, scoring nine goals in 21 appearances during his first season and winning the Glasgow Merchants’ Charity Cup. A prolific 1906/07 campaign followed, with 13 league goals, before a final season at Ibrox ended amid Rangers’ continued frustration behind their rivals Celtic.

In 1908 Speirs crossed the city to join Clyde, then based at Shawfield Park. There he enjoyed an effective season, scoring ten goals in 20 games and helping the club to a strong league finish and a cup semi-final appearance. His performances attracted attention south of the border, and in 1909 he signed for Bradford City, newly established in the First Division.

After a slow start in front of goal, Speirs became a central figure at Valley Parade. By the 1910/11 season he had been appointed captain, leading a disciplined and determined Bradford side to FA Cup glory. In the Final Replay at Old Trafford, Bradford defeated Newcastle United 1–0, with Speirs himself scoring the winning goal. It remains the club’s only FA Cup triumph, and Speirs’ name is forever bound to that historic moment. More than 100,000 supporters greeted the team on their return to Bradford—a testament to the magnitude of the achievement.

Injuries curtailed the following season, but Speirs returned strongly before moving to Leeds City in December 1912. Under the guidance of Herbert Chapman, he captained Leeds and enjoyed two productive seasons, forming a potent partnership with Billy McLeod. Although promotion ultimately eluded the club, Speirs’ leadership and scoring record remained exemplary.

By the end of the 1914/15 season, with football suspended by war, Speirs had completed a professional career spanning 256 appearances and 104 goals. He had won the FA Cup, captained two English clubs, and earned a full international cap for Scotland.

First World War Service

In May 1915, Speirs returned to Glasgow and enlisted in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He rose steadily through the ranks, earning promotion to sergeant and serving with distinction on the Somme and at Arras. In July 1917 his bravery in action was recognised with the award of the Military Medal, gazetted for courage under fire.

On 20 August 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres, Speirs was reported missing following heavy fighting near St Julien. Despite initial hopes that he had been taken prisoner, he was later declared missing presumed dead. His body was not recovered until 1919, and he was finally laid to rest at Dochy Farm Cemetery near Zonnebeke.

In a poignant postscript, a clerical error meant that Speirs lay beneath a mis-spelled headstone for almost ninety years. It was not until 2007 that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission corrected the mistake, restoring his name at last.

Legacy

Jimmy Speirs remains one of the most significant figures in Bradford City’s history—a captain, a cup-winner, and the scorer of the most important goal the club has ever known. Beyond football, he stands as a symbol of a lost generation of sportsmen whose lives and careers were claimed by war. His story endures as one of achievement, leadership, and sacrifice, both on the field and on the battlefield.
