Cradley Heath; Staffordshire–born wing half John Garrett was a product of Midlands football, representative of the many solid, experienced professionals whose careers bridged the disruption of the First World War.

Garratt began his footballing life in local Midlands football, playing for Halesowen prior to the War. Like many of his generation, his professional progress was delayed by wartime interruption, and it was not until after the Armistice that he entered League football proper.

Already aged 30, Garrett joined Everton in 1920 from Cradley Heath. He spent the 1920–21 season at Goodison Park, but despite his experience he did not make a first-team appearance for the Merseyside club, remaining on the fringes during a period of strong competition for places.

In the summer of 1921, Garrett moved to Chesterfield, then members of the Third Division (North). He made his Football League debut in March 1922, appearing against Ashington, and went on to establish himself as a dependable wing half. Over the course of his Chesterfield career he made 29 Football League appearances, providing experience and positional discipline in the middle of the park.

After leaving Chesterfield, Garrett returned to non-League football, continuing a peripatetic career typical of many players of the era. He spent time in Wales with Dragon of Pontypridd, before heading south to join Torquay United in 1924, as the club continued its rise in the West Country game.

In March 1926, Garrett moved along the Devon coast to Exeter City, making 11 appearances during the 1926 season. His later career saw further non-League service with Aldershot in 1927, followed by spells at Sheppey United in 1928 and Worcester City in 1929, before he finally retired from competitive football.

Though never a headline name, John Garrett’s career reflects the reality of post-war professional football: experienced, resilient players sustaining the expanding League and non-League system through reliability rather than reputation. His Chesterfield years remain the central chapter of a career forged through persistence, adaptability, and the hard graft of early twentieth-century football.
