This striking pre-war group captures Leeds City on the eve of the First World War, a side guided by one of football’s great innovators, Herbert Chapman.

Chapman, then serving as secretary-manager, was already beginning to shape the tactical ideas that would later revolutionise the English game. At Leeds City, he inherited a competitive Second Division side and instilled organisation, discipline, and a progressive approach that set the foundations for his later successes with Huddersfield Town and Arsenal.

The team itself presents a classic Edwardian footballing image: deep blue shirts emblazoned with bold gold “V” chevrons, white shorts, and heavy leather boots, all set against the familiar backdrop of a packed terrace. The presence of club officials in formal attire alongside the players reflects the era’s blend of professionalism and Victorian tradition.

The 1914/15 season would prove to be the last completed campaign before football was suspended due to the war. Like many clubs, Leeds City’s progress was abruptly halted, and within a few years the club itself would disappear from the Football League, making images such as this all the more poignant.
