Royal Engineers A.F.C. – FA Cup Finalists, 1872
Pictured here are the Royal Engineers Football Club, runners-up in the first ever FA Cup Final, played on 16 March 1872 at the Kennington Oval. Drawn from officers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, the “Sappers” were among the most influential teams of football’s formative years, renowned not only for their discipline and organisation but for pioneering an early form of passing play — the foundations of the modern game.
Wearing their distinctive red and black hooped shirts, dark knickerbockers and hooped stockings, the Engineers were narrowly defeated 1–0 by Wanderers, the match being decided by a single early goal. Though denied the trophy, their tactical approach and sporting conduct left a lasting impression and secured their place in football history.
The Royal Engineers would return to the final in later years and famously lift the FA Cup in 1875, remaining the only military team ever to win the competition.
