During his time on Merseyside, Hardy helped the club to Football League First Division titles in 1905–06 and 1921–22, anchoring defences with a commanding presence that inspired confidence in teammates and trepidation in opponents.

Renowned for his bravery, Hardy was particularly celebrated for his willingness to dive fearlessly at attackers’ feet — a dangerous art in an era of heavy leather balls, rudimentary boots, and minimal protection. Contemporary reports frequently noted his calm under pressure, sharp anticipation, and exceptional handling, traits that made him one of the most reliable last lines of defence in the country.

His excellence at club level was recognised internationally. Hardy earned 15 caps for England, a significant achievement at a time when international selection was fiercely competitive and goalkeeping places rarely rotated. His performances for England national football team further cemented his reputation as one of the outstanding custodians of his generation.

Following his Liverpool career, Hardy continued to play at the highest level, notably with Aston Villa, adding further honours to an already distinguished résumé. Yet it is his Liverpool years that remain most fondly remembered — a period when he embodied the stoic, workmanlike professionalism of the Edwardian footballer.
