From the earliest days of organised football in the 1860s to the end of the Second World War, Scottish football clubs took to the field wearing an extraordinary variety of colours and designs. Some became instantly recognisable and have survived for generations. Others disappeared almost as quickly as the clubs that wore them.
Scottish Football Club Colours is a beautifully illustrated celebration of this remarkable sporting heritage, bringing together the historic football strips of approximately 85 Scottish clubs, from the famous names of the Scottish game to those that have long since disappeared into history.
Before sponsorship, replica shirts and modern manufacturing, football clubs wore an astonishing assortment of hoops, stripes, quarters, sashes and wonderfully unusual colour combinations. Many of these designs would look extraordinary on a football pitch today.
Through original, carefully researched illustrations, this book brings those forgotten colours back to life.
The illustrations are accompanied by fascinating historical accounts of the clubs themselves, their origins, their achievements and, in many cases, their eventual disappearance.
The book concentrates principally on the period 1860–1945, with a selection of memorable designs from the 1950s and 1960s.
From the pioneers who helped establish association football to the smaller clubs whose names have almost vanished from the historical record, this is a celebration of the colours, characters and communities that helped make Scottish football what it is today.
