Third Lanark Football Club occupy a unique and deeply resonant place in the history of the Scottish game. Founded on 12 December 1872 as the football section of the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers (3rd LRV), the club emerged from Glasgow’s Volunteer Force at a time when organised football itself was still finding its feet. From their earliest days, Third Lanark were synonymous with discipline, athleticism, and innovation — qualities reflected both on the field and in their enduring nickname, “The Hi-Hi!”

Playing their football at New Cathkin Park, Third Lanark became one of the true standard-bearers of the early Scottish League era. Their greatest triumph came in 1903/04, when they were crowned Scottish League Champions, a remarkable achievement in a fiercely competitive age. Cup success followed, with Scottish Cup victories in 1888–89 and 1904–05, underlining the club’s status as one of the country’s leading sides at the turn of the century.

By the 1920s, Third Lanark were an established name in Scottish football, competing in front of large crowds and wearing the distinctive strip represented in this artwork — a period when the game had fully taken root in working-class culture and stadia like New Cathkin Park were central to community life. Although the club’s story ended tragically in 1967, their legacy remains woven into the fabric of Scottish football history.
