Liverpool FC — 1900/01 Season

The 1900/01 campaign marked a defining moment in Liverpool’s early history, as Tom Watson’s side secured the Football League title for the first time. It was an achievement shaped by resilience, recovery, and a decisive surge at the most critical stage of the season.

Liverpool began strongly, establishing themselves among the leading clubs with an effective attacking approach and a settled side. Sam Raybould provided the principal threat in front of goal, while a well-balanced team ensured consistency across the opening months.

That momentum, however, was not sustained. A difficult winter period saw results decline and the club fall away from the summit, with a series of defeats leaving them some distance behind the leaders. By early 1901, the title appeared beyond reach, and elimination from the FA Cup at the hands of Notts County only reinforced that impression.

The turning point came in the north-east. Locked in a tightening contest with Sunderland, Liverpool travelled to Roker Park and secured a vital 1–0 victory. In hindsight, it was the defining moment of their season. The result not only reduced the gap between the two sides, but restored belief and set in motion an unbeaten run that would carry Liverpool back into contention.

From that point onward, Liverpool did not lose again. A sequence of strong performances, including a crucial win over Nottingham Forest at Anfield, ensured that the title race would be decided in the closing days. With Sunderland having completed their fixtures, the outcome rested in Liverpool’s hands.

They did not falter. A narrow victory in their final match confirmed them as champions, completing a remarkable recovery from mid-season inconsistency.

Central to their success was the leadership of captain Alex Raisbeck, whose presence helped steady the side during its most uncertain period. Around him, a powerful and determined team found the resolve to overcome adversity and finish at the summit.

In only their ninth season, Liverpool had claimed the Football League championship — a landmark achievement that marked their emergence as a major force in English football.
