Greenock Morton – Club Colours, 1885

Founded in 1874 in the port town of Greenock, Greenock Morton are among the earliest surviving association football clubs in Scotland. Emerging during the formative years of the organised game, the club developed its identity at a time when football was rapidly establishing itself as a central feature of working-class and civic life along the River Clyde.

By the mid-1880s, Morton were competing in an era before standardised kits, when club colours served as the primary visual marker of identity and pride. The blue-and-white strip worn during this period reflects the practical yet distinctive character of early Scottish football attire, combining functionality with emerging club symbolism. Such colours were not merely ornamental but signified allegiance, locality, and continuity at a time when the sport was still defining its traditions.

This illustration forms part of the Scottish Club Colours Series, a visual archive dedicated to preserving and presenting the authentic playing colours of Scotland’s historic football clubs. Each artwork in the series is based on period sources and contemporary research, offering a faithful representation of football’s early visual culture and celebrating the clubs that shaped the foundations of the Scottish game.
