Woolwich Arsenal Football Club — The Gunners (1893–1914)

This print celebrates Woolwich Arsenal Football Club during its formative years in south-east London, before the club’s move north of the river and long before the Highbury era. Founded in 1893 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Plumstead, Woolwich Arsenal was a true industrial football club, earning the enduring nickname “The Gunners.”

At the heart of the composition stands a period-accurate Woolwich Arsenal footballer, rendered in the deep red shirts worn at the turn of the twentieth century. Surrounding him are carefully curated contemporary artefacts, including benefit cards, popular trade illustrations, and European programme material, all reflecting the club’s growing stature during the Edwardian era.

The scene is anchored by The Manor Ground, Plumstead, Woolwich Arsenal’s home from 1893 until 1913, depicted here as a living, crowded football ground at the height of its use. A rare team photograph from the 1906–07 seasonreinforces the club’s status as an established Football League side during this period.
