In the early years of association football, long before organised international club competitions, matches between the leading clubs of Scotland and England were widely regarded as contests for global supremacy.

The 1901–02 Football World Championship was one such series, contested between the holders of the Scottish Cup, Heart of Midlothian, and the winners of the English FA Cup, Tottenham Hotspur.

Played over two legs, the first match took place on 2 September 1901 at High Road Ground, the early name of what would later become White Hart Lane. A goalless draw set the stage for a decisive return fixture.

The second match, played at Tynecastle Park on 2 January 1902, saw Heart of Midlothian assert their authority with a 3–1 victory, securing the World Championship title.

This was no exhibition in name only. All eleven of Tottenham’s FA Cup-winning side took part in the opening match, alongside nine of Hearts’ Scottish Cup winners, underlining the seriousness with which both clubs approached the contest.

It was the second time Hearts had contested – and won – a Football World Championship, reinforcing their status as one of the dominant forces of the early world game.

This print commemorates a defining moment in football history, when the champions of Scotland and England met to decide supremacy — and when Heart of Midlothian emerged as World Champions.
