The 1891 FA Cup Final, played on Saturday 21 March at the Kennington Oval, brought together two of the era’s foremost sides in Blackburn Rovers and Notts County. Before a crowd of 23,000, the match carried a sense of uncertainty despite Blackburn’s formidable pedigree in the competition. Indeed, many observers favoured Notts County, particularly after their emphatic 7–1 league victory over the holders just a week earlier at Blackburn—a result that seemed to foreshadow a changing of the guard.

Yet football, even in its Victorian form, had a habit of defying expectation. From the outset, Blackburn Rovers imposed themselves with greater cohesion and urgency. Their play was sharper, their movement more fluid, and, crucially, their finishing far more decisive. At the heart of it all was Geordie Dewar at centre-half, delivering a performance of outstanding authority that set the tone for the contest.

The breakthrough came after just nine minutes. A long throw from Joe Lofthouse, delivered from near the corner flag, caused chaos in the Notts County defence. In the ensuing scramble, the ball was forced over the line—generally credited to Dewar—giving Rovers an early advantage. The Lancashire side quickly built upon it. Thirteen minutes later, Jack Southworth doubled the lead with a well-taken effort, and within four more minutes William Townley added a third, heading home to complete a devastating opening spell.

At 3–0 by the interval, Blackburn’s superiority was unmistakable. Their defence, marshalled with composure and discipline, rarely faltered, while their forwards continued to threaten whenever they advanced. Notts County, for all their reputation, struggled to recover from the early onslaught. It was not until the seventy-first minute that James Oswald managed to reduce the deficit, scoring a consolation goal that did little to alter the outcome.

The final whistle confirmed a 3–1 victory for Blackburn Rovers, securing their second consecutive FA Cup triumph and further cementing their place among the dominant forces of the late nineteenth century. In doing so, they equalled the remarkable record of the Wanderers F.C., who had won the Cup five times in its first seven seasons—a benchmark of excellence in the competition’s formative years.

The journey to the final had been no less impressive. Blackburn swept aside opposition with authority, including a 7–0 victory over Chester and a hard-fought 3–2 semi-final win against West Bromwich Albion. Notts County, meanwhile, demonstrated their own attacking prowess, most notably with a 9–1 victory over Sheffield United and a semi-final replay triumph against Sunderland.

In the end, however, the 1891 final belonged to Blackburn Rovers. Their blend of organisation, speed, and clinical finishing proved decisive on the day, reaffirming their status as one of the great cup sides of the Victorian era and adding another chapter to their illustrious FA Cup history.
