Celtic FC

Celtic Football Club of Glasgow is one of the most historically significant institutions in the development of association football in Scotland and Europe. Founded in 1887, the club was established by the Marist Brother Brother Walfrid as a charitable venture designed to alleviate poverty in Glasgow’s East End Irish immigrant community. The club’s inaugural meeting took place in St. Mary’s Church Hall in the Calton district, with the aim of raising funds for the Poor Children’s Dinner Tables.

Celtic played their first match on 28 May 1888, defeating Rangers 5–2 in a friendly at the original Celtic Park. From the outset the club adopted the distinctive green and white colours associated with Irish heritage. The famous hooped shirts, which later became synonymous with Celtic’s identity, were introduced in 1903; prior to this the team wore green shirts with white collars.

Success came quickly. Celtic won their first Scottish Football League championship in 1892–93, only the club’s fifth season of league competition. The team became a dominant force in Scottish football during the closing years of the nineteenth century under the stewardship of the influential secretary-manager Willie Maley, who would go on to serve the club for an extraordinary 43 years.

During Maley’s tenure Celtic captured numerous league titles and Scottish Cup triumphs, establishing themselves as one of the leading clubs in Britain. Among the most remarkable achievements was the celebrated “Six-in-a-Row” sequence of Scottish league championships between 1905–06 and 1910–11, a record that stood for more than half a century.

Celtic Park, opened in 1892 in the Parkhead district of Glasgow, quickly became one of the grand venues of the British game. Known to supporters as “Paradise,” the stadium regularly drew enormous crowds during the Edwardian period, reflecting the club’s immense popularity.

The club’s greatest moment on the European stage came in 1967 when Celtic defeated Inter Milan 2–1 in the 1967 European Cup Final, becoming the first British side to win Europe’s premier club competition. The victorious side, managed by Jock Stein, became immortalised as the “Lisbon Lions.” Remarkably, every member of the team had been born within a short distance of Celtic Park.

Throughout its history Celtic has remained one of the most decorated clubs in world football, amassing numerous Scottish league championships, domestic cups, and international honours. Equally important has been the club’s cultural significance. Celtic has long served as a symbol of identity and pride for communities of Irish descent in Scotland and beyond, while maintaining one of the largest and most passionate support bases in global football.

More than a century after its founding, Celtic continues to play at Celtic Park, where the famous green-and-white hoops remain one of the most recognisable sights in the game.
