Clyde FC

Clyde Football Club was formed in 1877 in Glasgow, taking its name from the nearby River Clyde, the great industrial artery of the city. The club quickly established itself within the developing structure of Scottish football and became one of the sport’s early competitive forces. Clyde joined the Scottish Football League in 1891, the League’s second season, and for decades were a familiar presence in the top tier of the Scottish game.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Clyde developed a reputation as a solid First Division side. Their original ground was Barrowfield Park in the east end of Glasgow, before moving to the much larger Shawfield Stadium in 1898. Shawfield would become Clyde’s spiritual home for nearly ninety years and was the stage for many of the club’s greatest moments.

Although league titles eluded them, Clyde regularly competed strongly in cup competitions and produced a number of outstanding players during the inter-war years. The club’s greatest achievements came in the Scottish Cup, which Clyde famously won in 1939, defeating Motherwell 4–0 at Hampden Park in one of the most emphatic finals in the competition’s history. The victory came just months before the outbreak of the Second World War and remains one of the club’s most celebrated triumphs.

After the war Clyde continued to be a respected force in Scottish football and enjoyed further success when they lifted the Scottish Cup again in 1955 and 1958, becoming one of the few clubs outside the traditional Glasgow powers to achieve multiple victories in the tournament.

Clyde remain an important part of Scotland’s football heritage. Their history stretches back to the formative decades of the sport, and through generations of players and supporters the club has retained its identity as one of Glasgow’s historic football institutions.
