Founded in 1896, Gainsborough Trinity are one of English football’s great provincial survivors, a club whose story reflects the roots of the professional game beyond the major cities. Based in Lincolnshire and long associated with Northolme, Trinity carved out a reputation as a fiercely competitive side during football’s formative years, competing in the Midland League and later the Football League in the early twentieth century.

Though never among the sport’s aristocracy, Gainsborough Trinity embodied the spirit of late-Victorian and Edwardian football: locally rooted, proudly amateur in outlook, and deeply connected to their town. Matches were community occasions, players were often tradesmen, and club colours were worn as symbols of identity rather than branding. This print forms part of the Club Colours Series, an ongoing project dedicated to documenting and celebrating the extraordinary variety of football kits worn during the game’s earliest decades. Before standardisation, sponsorship, or mass production, clubs expressed themselves through bold sashes, hoops, quarters, and unconventional colour combinations — many of which are now lost to time.

Each artwork in the series is inspired by documented or widely referenced historical colour traditions, presented in a late-nineteenth-century illustrated style reminiscent of period advertising, chromolithographs, and sporting prints. The aim is not modern re-imagining, but respectful visual interpretation — placing historic club identity back into the aesthetic world in which it originally existed.
