George Washington Elliott

George Washington Elliott was one of the most prolific and important players in the early history of Middlesbrough, and among the finest centre-forwards in the English game before the First World War.

Elliott signed for Middlesbrough on 3 May 1909. He began his career with the club at inside-right, but it was his subsequent conversion to centre-forward that transformed both his own career and Middlesbrough’s attacking fortunes. From that point on, he became the focal point of the side for well over a decade.

He was a remarkably consistent goalscorer at the very highest level of the game. Elliott finished as First Division top scorer in the 1913–14 season, scoring 31 league goals, a notable achievement in an era of heavy pitches, physical defending, and limited tactical protection for forwards. Between 1910–11 and the outbreak of the First World War, he was Middlesbrough’s leading scorer in seven of nine peacetime seasons, underlining his dominance and reliability.

One of Elliott’s most extraordinary feats came at reserve-team level, where he scored 11 goals in a single match during a 14–1 victory over Houghton Rovers—a club record that still stood many decades later.

His performances also brought international recognition. Elliott won three caps for England, a significant honour at a time when selection was fiercely competitive and opportunities limited.

Elliott spent virtually his entire Middlesbrough career in the top flight, only experiencing relegation in his penultimate season. His final campaign, 1924–25, was played in the Second Division, with his last appearance coming against Southampton. He retired shortly afterwards, returning to civilian life as a cargo superintendent at Middlesbrough docks.

Across his league career for Middlesbrough, Elliott made 344 League appearances, scoring an outstanding 203 goals, a record that places him among the club’s greatest ever players.

In 1925, Elliott was charged with manslaughter following the death of an eleven-year-old Italian boy whose body was found beneath his car. He was acquitted later that year, and the case did not result in a conviction.

George Washington Elliott remains a towering figure in Middlesbrough’s early Football League history—a relentless, powerful centre-forward whose scoring feats helped define the club’s pre-war identity.
