Scottish Goalkeeper — Manchester City & Sheffield Wednesday

John “Jack” Lyall (16 April 1881 – 17 February 1944) was a Scottish goalkeeper best known for his long and successful career at both Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City, and for earning recognition at the international level with Scotland. 

Born in Dundee, Scotland, but raised on Tyneside, Lyall learned his football in the robust amateur and semi-professional game around Jarrow, where he began his career before turning professional in 1901 with Sheffield Wednesday. Standing tall and commanding his area, Lyall quickly established himself as one of the era’s reliable custodians. During his eight years with Wednesday he made 295 appearances in all competitions, helping the club claim two Football League titles (1902–03, 1903–04) and an FA Cup triumph in 1907 — major honours at a time when the modern league system was still solidifying its prestige. 

In 1909 Lyall signed for Manchester City, where he remained for two seasons and was part of the squad that won the Second Division title in 1909–10, securing an immediate return to the top flight for the club. Over his City career he made 40 league appearances, contributing experienced stability between the posts during a period of transition for the club. 

After his time in England’s Football League, Lyall returned to Scotland with Dundee, where he continued as first-choice goalkeeper before finishing his playing days with Ayr United and a final spell back at Jarrow during the First World War. 

Lyall’s quality was recognised at the highest level: he won one cap for Scotland in 1905, a notable achievement in an era when international fixtures were far fewer and competition for places intense. 

Off the field, Lyall served with distinction as a corporal in the Royal Engineers during the First World War, seeing service in India before emigrating to the United States later in life.
