John Gurkin, Norwich City

John Gurkin (9 September 1895 – 25 February 1976) was a dependable County Durham–born centre half whose career bridged both the Football League and the rugged non-league circuits of the North and Midlands during the inter-war years.

Born in Murton, Gurkin began his footballing journey in the aftermath of the First World War, turning out for Dean Bank Villa in 1919 before moving to South Hetton Royal Rovers the following year. His performances earned him a move into the professional ranks when he signed for Second Division side West Ham United in January 1921. Opportunities in East London proved limited, however, and he made just a single Football League appearance—his debut coming in a 2–0 defeat at Stoke in August 1921.

In June 1922, Gurkin joined Third Division (South) club Norwich City, where he enjoyed a more sustained run in the side, making ten league appearances during the 1922–23 season. At the end of that campaign he dropped into non-league football with Stalybridge Celtic, before returning to the North East later in 1923 with Spennymoor United.

Gurkin’s most significant period came following his return to the Football League with Durham City in August 1924. At Holiday Park he became a model of consistency, establishing himself as a near ever-present figure at centre half. Between 1925 and 1928 he missed only three matches, amassing 166 league appearances and scoring three goals. In doing so, he became Durham City’s record Football League appearance holder, a remarkable achievement for a club often battling in the lower reaches of the Third Division North.

When Durham City lost their League status in May 1928, Gurkin departed and rejoined Stalybridge Celtic. A year later he returned once more to League football, signing for Exeter City in 1929. His time in Devon was brief: he made just two appearances during the 1929–30 season—his debut coming at centre half against Queen’s Park Rangers in September, and his second and final outing arriving in the last match of the campaign away to Torquay United.

Released soon after, Gurkin moved back into non-league football with Hyde United in the summer of 1930, spending two seasons in Lancashire before returning to his native North East in 1932. He had spells with Jarrow and later Murton Colliery Welfare, the latter marking the closing chapter of a long and industrious career.

Gurkin died in Sunderland in February 1976 at the age of 80, remembered as a durable and reliable half-back whose greatest contribution came during his outstanding service with Durham City in the Football League.
