The 1913/14 season stands as one of the most poignant and significant chapters in Liverpool Football Club’s early history. It was a campaign that culminated in the club’s first-ever appearance in an FA Cup Final, achieved on the very eve of the First World War — a moment frozen in time between Edwardian football and a world about to change forever.

Liverpool’s cup run gathered momentum through the winter of 1913–14, marked by disciplined defending, tactical organisation, and a growing confidence that this side could compete on the grandest stage. Under the stewardship of manager George Patterson, and with Ephraim Longworth — later to become one of the club’s most influential captains — anchoring the defence, Liverpool progressed steadily to the final.

The final itself was staged at Crystal Palace on 25 April 1914, where Liverpool faced Burnley in front of a vast crowd. In a hard-fought contest, Liverpool were narrowly defeated 1–0, but the result did little to diminish the achievement. Reaching the final marked a watershed moment, confirming Liverpool as one of the leading forces in English football.

This squad is particularly notable not only for its footballing quality but for what followed. Within months, competitive football would be suspended as war engulfed Europe.
