Founded in 1872, Rangers are one of the oldest and most influential football clubs in the world. Emerging from the west of Scotland at a time when association football was still organising itself, the club quickly became a central force in shaping the modern game.

Rangers were pioneers in professionalism, tactical organisation, and large-scale spectator football, helping to define football not just as a pastime, but as a mass cultural institution.

The club’s early years coincided with a transformative period in British sport. About the Print

This artwork is a museum-style historical illustration, created to evoke the look and feel of a late-19th / early-20th-century chromolithograph. The footballer is rendered in period-accurate kit and stance, preserving the visual language of the era rather than modernising it. His calm, upright pose reflects how players were typically presented at the time — dignified, formal, and emblematic of the club rather than individual celebrity.

The background stadium scene is based on early Ibrox architecture, carefully integrated into the illustration so that it reads as a single, unified artwork rather than a modern photographic insertion. Contrast has been flattened, tones softened, and subtle paper grain introduced to mirror period printing techniques.

Typography plays a central role in the piece. The Victorian-style hand-drawn lettering is inspired by late-19th-century commercial ephemera and agricultural annuals of the period, with irregular letterforms, softened edges, and restrained colour saturation. Nothing is digitally “perfected” — the intention is to replicate the slight imperfections of historic printmaking.

This image depicts a Burnley footballer from 1887, created as part of a wider project to expose and celebrate the wonderful array of historic club colours found across British football. Long before standardisation, clubs expressed their identity through distinctive and often striking combinations of colour, fabric, and design. This print seeks to restore that richness, presenting Burnley as they appeared in the game’s formative years and highlighting the visual diversity that defined early Association Football.
