Vince Hayes, Manchester United

James Vincent “Vince” Hayes (24 March 1879 – 1 June 1964), also known during his career as Vic Hayes, was one of the most resilient and under-appreciated figures of Manchester United’s formative years.

Born in Miles Platting, Manchester, Hayes was trained as a boilermaker, a trade that mirrored the toughness and durability he brought to football. A reliable full-back, he made his first-team debut for Newton Heath in February 1901, at a time when the club was still fighting for survival both on and off the pitch.

When Newton Heath became Manchester United in 1902, Hayes remained part of the evolving side, though his career was repeatedly threatened by serious injury. In 1905, he suffered the extraordinary misfortune of breaking both legs, only to break one again shortly after returning to fitness. Few players of the Edwardian era endured — or recovered from — such setbacks.

Despite this, Hayes returned to the game, leaving United for Brentford in May 1907, before making a determined comeback to Old Trafford in June 1908. His perseverance was rewarded when he played his part in United’s historic FA Cup triumph of 1909, the club’s first major trophy under its new name.

Hayes left Manchester United in November 1910, having scored two goals in 128 appearances across his two spells — modest statistics that belie his importance as a steady, professional presence during a crucial period in the club’s early history.

His footballing life extended well beyond England. Hayes later became a respected coach, guiding Norway at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games, and later working with Wiener SC in Austria. In 1923, he took on his final managerial role with Atlético Madrid, contributing to the development of the game in Spain during its formative years.
